OUR CORRESPONDENT : Dhubri, Oct. 6: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) will form a “human chain” along the Indo-Bangladesh border from Lakhimari village in Dhubri district on October 13 to protest the slow pace of barbed-wire fencing work and unabated infiltration.
AASU president Sankar Prasad Rai, who along with other office-bearers arrived here to take stock of the preparation at local-level units, revealed this plan.
Several people from all over the state are excepted to participate in the programme.
Rai also visited Lakhimari and Sonahat border villages and interacted with the villagers there.
Talking to the mediapersons at Gouripur, Rai said almost 24 years had passed since the Assam Accord was signed between the Centre and the AASU but many clauses of the accord were yet to be implemented.
“First barbed-wire fencing along the India-Bangladesh border erected in 1987 proved to be irrelevant as it could neither stopped infiltration nor trans-border movement of insurgent groups through the porous areas,” Rai said.
He said the AASU wanted sealing of the 272-km-long border in Dhubri and Karimganj.
While expressing displeasure over the poor quality of fencing work, Rai said the AASU was going to seek compensation against land, which fell behind the barbed fencing. He said landowners of the nearly 1,000 acres were unable to cultivate their farmlands as the BSF had imposed restrictions. So it is better that the government acquires the land and compensates the poor farmers who lost almost everything during Partition, he added.
Another human chain programme will be held at Karimganj at the end of this month.
