On February 12, 1992 a Rakhaine village called Sulapara in Sonachhari Union of Bandaban district was attacked by some miscreants. The village is located about fifteen miles north-west of Cox's Bazar mear Myanmar border. The village with about 10 to 12 thatched homesteads has a population of about fifty Rajhine people who are very poor.
At around 9 pm, some miscreants numbering about 30 armed with daos and other lether weapons entered the village and overpowered the male inhabitants after severely beating them up. A number of women and young girls were gangraped and mercileously beaten up.
The miscreants then looted whatever belongings the inhabitants had and told them to leave the village and go over to Myanmar. The villagers were warned that if they did not comply, then next time they would all be killed.
According to the villagers the miscreants spoke in Burmese language.
Observers say that miscreatns could be agents of some localfundamentalist group or infiltrators from across the border trying to create communal tension.
it has been alleged that during the brutal attack one of the villagers managed to reach the police camp located about two miles north of the village but the police did not respond immediately to the call for help.
